Forming a major milestone on the highway of Australian currency history, the 1984 Year Set includes the very last circulation coins to carry the original decimal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Arnold Machin, this classic portrayal of the young monarch adorns the 1984 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1 found in this set.

The inclusion of the 1984 Mob of Kangaroos $1 – Australia’s first $1 coin date, and unique as the only $1 to carry the Machin portrait – is a major bonus for collectors. Why? Because, launched in May of 1984, the first $1 coin was issued too late to be included in the RAM’s 1984 Mint Set. Never fear – it’s included in our 1984 Year Set! Importantly, so is the 1984 20c.

Although the 1984 20c had a mintage of nearly 28 million, this date is very scarce. The scarcity is due to the fact that there was no demand for the 20c coin through the Reserve Bank of Australia at the time it was struck, and it is believed that virtually the entire mintage was melted down and exported as cupro-nickel bars.
